How to Add a Text Watermark to Your Videos for Copyright Protection

A visible text watermark with your name or brand deters unauthorized use of your video content. Here is how to add one that protects without ruining the viewing experience.

Watermarking video is a balance between protection and viewing experience. Too prominent, and it distracts from the content. Too subtle, and it can be cropped or covered. The goal is a watermark that clearly identifies you as the creator while allowing the content to be enjoyed.

When you need a watermark

Preview content: Sending a video to a potential buyer or client before payment. The watermark prevents them from using the unwatermarked version without paying.

Portfolio work: Showing your work online where others might download and reuse it without credit.

Stock footage: Selling video clips on marketplaces. The preview uses a watermark; the purchased version does not.

Social media protection: Deterring content farms from reposting your videos without credit. A visible watermark makes stolen content obviously stolen.

Internal drafts: Marking videos as "DRAFT" or "FOR REVIEW ONLY" to prevent premature distribution.

Text watermark best practices

Position: Lower-right corner is the standard position. It is visible but does not interfere with the main subject, which is usually centered or in the upper portion of the frame. Avoid center-screen watermarks unless you are specifically trying to prevent unauthorized use (preview/stock footage use case).

Size: 3-5% of the frame height for subtle branding. 8-15% for preview protection watermarks. Text should be readable but not dominant.

Opacity: 30-50% opacity for branding watermarks (semi-transparent, visible but not distracting). 60-80% opacity for protection watermarks (clearly visible, difficult to remove).

Color: White text with a thin dark outline (or drop shadow) works on any background. Pure white disappears on bright scenes. Pure black disappears on dark scenes. The outline ensures readability regardless of background content.

Content: Your name, brand name, website URL, or copyright symbol with year. Keep it short. "mediabrewtools.com" is better than "Copyright 2026 MediaBrew Tools LLC All Rights Reserved."

Repeating vs. single watermark

Single watermark (one instance, typically corner-positioned): Standard for branding. Subtle and professional.

Repeating watermark (tiled across the entire frame, rotated 30-45 degrees): Standard for stock footage previews and client review copies. Makes the video unusable for commercial purposes without purchasing the clean version. More aggressive but appropriate for the use case.

Can watermarks be removed?

Simple watermarks (solid text in a corner) can be removed by someone with video editing skills. They can crop, blur, or use content-aware fill to eliminate the watermark. This is why watermarks are deterrents, not guarantees.

More effective protection methods include: registering your copyright, using platform-specific content ID systems (YouTube Content ID), and embedding invisible watermarks (steganography) that survive editing.

Visible watermarks deter casual theft. They do not prevent determined theft. But the vast majority of unauthorized reuse is casual (someone downloads and re-uploads without thinking about it). A visible watermark stops most of that. The MediaBrew watermark tool burns text into every frame of the video, with adjustable position, size, and opacity. Keep your original unwatermarked file safe.
