What this tool does
Choose a published photo size, position your own image with measurement guides, and export a print-ready JPEG or sheet. This tool formats and checks photos locally; the issuing authority makes the final acceptance decision.
Why use it
Passport and visa applications reject photos for small but important reasons: the physical dimensions are wrong, the face is too large or too small, the eyes sit outside the required band, or the background and expression do not meet the receiving authority's rules. Formatting a phone portrait by eye is unreliable, especially when the finished print must be an exact size.
This tool turns a normal portrait into a measured output for a named authority or a custom size. It keeps the original image in your browser, gives you manual control instead of silently changing your face, and creates both a single JPEG and a print sheet.
How it works under the hood
The image is decoded with its camera orientation applied, then rendered into an exact pixel canvas for the selected preset. The crop is proportional, so the subject is not stretched. MediaPipe Face Landmarker can run locally in the browser to estimate the face centre, eye line, tilt, and face height; those values create a suggested crop and advisory warnings, not an official approval decision.
Canvas output is encoded as JPEG and the tool writes print-resolution metadata into the output. The optional 4 x 6 inch and A4 sheets are rendered at 300 DPI with repeated copies and cut guides. Passport mode does not replace the background, retouch the face, or apply beautification.
Tips and best practices
Use a recent, straight-on photo with even lighting, a plain light background, a neutral expression, and no glare. Take the photo from several feet away rather than using a close selfie lens. Keep the whole head visible and use the manual guides after the automatic face check.
The named presets are tied to official sources and show their verification date. Requirements can change by country, document type, and digital versus paper application, so open the authority link before submitting. The tool formats a photo and flags likely issues; it cannot guarantee acceptance.
Browser tool vs alternatives
Many passport-photo sites upload personal portraits to a third-party server and automatically edit the background or face. That can conflict with authorities that require an original, unaltered image. MediaBrew keeps the photo in browser memory and makes the no-retouching boundary visible. Desktop editors can produce the same crop, but they make exact physical dimensions, DPI metadata, file-size limits, and print-sheet tiling unnecessarily difficult for a one-off application.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The image is decoded and rendered in your browser. The first face check may download a model and WebAssembly assets, but your photo is not sent to our server.
Does this guarantee acceptance?
No. It formats dimensions and gives advisory checks. Each passport, visa, or ID authority makes its own decision and may update its rules.
Does it replace the background?
Not in Passport mode. Background replacement and face retouching can make a photo unacceptable, so this workflow preserves the original background.
Which countries are supported?
The current named presets are US, UK, Canada, and France visa/ICAO-style. Use Custom for other applications until their official requirements are verified.
Can I print several copies?
Yes. Export a 4 x 6 inch or A4 print sheet at 300 DPI with repeated copies and cut guides.
