Why use it
Some platforms do not auto-play video but do auto-animate GIFs. How it works under the hood
Converting video to a high-quality GIF requires two FFmpeg passes because GIF's 256-color palette must be optimized for the actual content. The first pass runs fps=N,scale=W:-1:flags=lanczos,palettegen, which samples every frame of the specified clip segment and computes an optimal 256-color palette tuned to the actual content using the Lanczos resampling algorithm. The palette is written to a temporary PNG file.
The second pass takes both the original video and the palette PNG as inputs and runs fps=N,scale=W:-1:flags=lanczos[x];[x][1:v]paletteuse through -filter_complex. The paletteuse filter dithers each frame against the precomputed optimal palette, producing a GIF that preserves much more color fidelity than a single-pass default-palette conversion. Both passes use the trim boundaries (-ss, -to) you specified.
Tips and best practices
Width and FPS are the two biggest controls for file size. A GIF at 480px wide and 10fps is typically 3 to 8 MB for a 3-second clip. The same clip at 720px and 15fps can be 20 to 40 MB. For most reaction GIFs and product demos, 480px at 10 to 12fps hits the sweet spot between size and smoothness.
Keep your clips under 5 seconds if the GIF will be shared in a chat or email. Longer GIFs are not just larger, they can cause noticeable stuttering on lower-end devices that must decode many large frames in sequence. For longer sequences, convert to MP4 instead.
Browser tool vs alternatives
Single-pass GIF converters (most free online tools) skip the palette generation step and use a default 256-color web palette. The output looks washed out and banded on any content with gradients or skin tones. Two-pass converters with palettegen are standard in professional workflows but typically require command-line FFmpeg.
