How to Downscale a 4K Video to 1080p (and Why You Might Want To)

4K files are 4x larger than 1080p files. Most viewers cannot tell the difference on phone screens. Here is how to downscale for faster uploads, smaller files, and broader compatibility.

4K video (3840x2160 pixels) contains four times as many pixels as 1080p (1920x1080). This means 4K files are roughly 3-4x larger at the same quality setting. A 1-minute 4K clip from a phone is 300-500 MB. The same clip at 1080p is 80-150 MB.

For most sharing scenarios, 1080p is more practical.

When 4K is overkill

Social media: Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter compress and downscale uploaded content. Even if you upload 4K, viewers on phones see it at 1080p or lower. You are uploading 4x the data for zero visible improvement to the viewer.

Email and messaging: Attachments have size limits. A 4K file exceeds them quickly. Downscaling to 1080p often gets the file under the limit without additional compression.

Web embedding: A 4K video embedded on a website takes longer to load and uses more bandwidth. Most website visitors are on mobile connections where bandwidth matters. 1080p looks identical on a phone screen.

Presentations: Projectors and conference room displays are typically 1080p. Displaying a 4K video on a 1080p projector provides zero benefit because the projector downscales it in real time.

When 4K matters

Large screen viewing: If the video will be displayed on a 4K TV, monitor, or cinema screen, the additional resolution is visible at closer viewing distances.

Future-proofing: If you want the highest quality archive for future use on higher-resolution displays, keep the 4K original.

Professional editing: If the video will be cropped, zoomed, or stabilized in post-production, 4K provides extra pixel data that allows lossless cropping to 1080p.

The downscaling process

Downscaling is computationally simple. The encoder reads the 4K frames, applies a scaling algorithm (typically Lanczos or bicubic) to reduce each frame to 1080p, and encodes the smaller frames.

The scaling algorithm matters for quality. Lanczos produces the sharpest results with minimal ringing artifacts. Bicubic is slightly softer but avoids ringing entirely. Bilinear is the fastest but produces noticeably softer output. For video downscaling, Lanczos is the standard choice.

File size after downscaling

The reduction depends on the source material, but typical results:

  • 4K at CRF 23: 300 MB for 1 minute
  • 1080p at CRF 23: 80 MB for 1 minute (73% reduction)
  • 1080p at CRF 28: 40 MB for 1 minute (87% reduction)
