Meeting recordings are some of the noisiest audio content because multiple participants contribute their own background noise. One person has a mechanical keyboard. Another has a barking dog. A third has an echo because their speakers are feeding back into their microphone. The host's AC unit drones throughout.
Zoom and Teams have built-in noise suppression, but it processes audio in real time during the call. The local recording may capture the raw audio before platform-level noise suppression is applied. Cloud recordings from Zoom include their processing, but the quality varies depending on participant audio quality.
Common noise problems in meeting recordings
Keyboard typing: Mechanical keyboards produce sharp transient sounds (clicks and clacks) that are difficult for noise reduction to handle because they are brief and share frequency ranges with speech consonants. Membrane keyboards produce softer but still audible thuds.
Echo and reverb: Participants in rooms with hard surfaces (home offices with tile floors, conference rooms with glass walls) produce echoey audio. This is technically reverb, not noise, and standard noise reduction is minimally effective against it.
Participant crosstalk: Multiple people talking simultaneously is common in meetings. If you need to hear one person clearly, noise reduction will not isolate them from the others. You would need source separation technology.

Processing meeting recordings for different purposes
For internal reference (meeting minutes, action items): Moderate noise reduction is sufficient. The recording just needs to be understandable when you replay specific segments.
For sharing externally (client call recording, training material): More aggressive noise reduction is appropriate. The recording represents your organization, and cleaner audio creates a more professional impression.
For transcription (sending to Whisper, Otter, or similar): Light noise reduction may slightly improve transcription accuracy for segments where noise overlaps with speech. However, modern transcription AI is quite noise-tolerant. Test with and without noise reduction to see if accuracy improves for your specific recordings.
Preventing noise in future recordings
Prevention is more effective than post-processing:
- Use a headset or dedicated microphone instead of laptop built-in mic

- Mute when not speaking (this prevents your noise from entering the recording)
- Record in a quiet room with soft surfaces
