Cropping a video means removing pixels from the edges to create a tighter frame. Unlike resizing, which scales the entire image to a new dimension, cropping cuts away the outer portions and keeps only the region you select. The result is a smaller frame showing a specific part of the original shot.
When cropping is the right tool
Cropping is useful when your video has too much empty space around the subject. A video recorded in landscape (16:9) might show your subject small in the center with walls and ceiling taking up most of the frame. Cropping in tighter puts the focus where it belongs.
It is also useful for changing the aspect ratio of existing footage. If you have a horizontal 16:9 video and need a vertical 9:16 version for Instagram Reels or TikTok, cropping is one approach. You lose the left and right edges, but the center of the frame stays sharp because no scaling occurs.
Cropping versus resizing
Resizing changes the dimensions of the entire frame. If you resize a 1920x1080 video to 1080x1080, the image is squished or stretched unless you also crop. Cropping changes the frame by removing edges. A 1920x1080 video cropped to 1080x1080 removes 420 pixels from each side but keeps the center at full resolution.
For platform-specific formatting, cropping usually gives better results than resizing because it preserves the original pixel density in the region you keep.
Common aspect ratios and when to use them
16:9 is the standard widescreen format for YouTube and most screens. 9:16 is vertical for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. 1:1 is square, used on Instagram feed posts and some Facebook placements. 4:3 is the older TV format, occasionally used for a vintage aesthetic. 4:5 is a portrait format used for Instagram feed videos that take up more screen space than 1:1.
What you lose when you crop
Cropping is destructive. The pixels you remove are gone from the output. If you crop a 1920x1080 video to 1080x1080, you are discarding 44% of the original frame. Make sure the area you are keeping contains everything you need. Once cropped and saved, you would need the original file to get those edges back.
