When people say a video is "1080p" they are describing its vertical pixel count: 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall. The "p" stands for progressive scan (as opposed to interlaced, which alternates odd and even lines per frame). But resolution is just one factor in how sharp a video looks. Two 1080p videos can look dramatically different depending on bitrate, codec, and compression settings.
The actual pixel counts
Here are the standard resolutions with their exact pixel dimensions and total pixel counts:
- 480p (SD): 854 x 480 = 409,920 pixels per frame
- 720p (HD): 1280 x 720 = 921,600 pixels per frame
- 1080p (Full HD): 1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 pixels per frame
- 1440p (2K/QHD): 2560 x 1440 = 3,686,400 pixels per frame
- 2160p (4K/UHD): 3840 x 2160 = 8,294,400 pixels per frame
Each step roughly doubles the total pixel count. 4K has exactly four times the pixels of 1080p, which is why it is called "4K" even though 3840 is not 4000. The naming convention comes from cinema, where the horizontal resolution is approximately 4,000 pixels.
Why higher resolution does not always mean better quality
Resolution determines the maximum amount of detail a video can contain, but compression determines how much of that detail survives encoding. A 4K video encoded at a very low bitrate (say 2 Mbps) will look worse than a 1080p video encoded at a high bitrate (say 20 Mbps). The 4K frame has more pixels, but each pixel gets so little data that the encoder must discard significant detail, producing visible compression artifacts like banding, blocking, and blurriness.
This is why YouTube videos sometimes look blurry right after uploading. YouTube initially serves a lower-bitrate transcode and then makes higher-quality versions available as they finish processing. The resolution label says 1080p, but the bitrate behind it determines whether it actually looks sharp.
When each resolution makes sense
480p is the right choice when file size is the primary constraint. Email attachments, messaging apps with tight size limits (WhatsApp, Discord free tier), and archival of non-critical footage all benefit from 480p. On a phone screen, which is typically 6 inches diagonally, 480p is often indistinguishable from 720p at normal viewing distances.
720p hits the sweet spot for most online sharing. It looks sharp on phones and tablets, streams reliably even on slower connections, and produces files roughly 55% smaller than 1080p at equivalent quality settings. Many streaming services default to 720p on mobile.
1080p is the standard for content you want to look professional. YouTube, Vimeo, and most social platforms display 1080p well on both mobile and desktop. Screen recordings, tutorials, and product demos benefit from 1080p because text and UI elements need to be legible.
4K is relevant for cinematic content, large-screen playback, and future-proofing footage you plan to crop or reframe later. Recording in 4K gives you the flexibility to punch in to a 1080p crop of any portion of the frame without losing sharpness. For direct sharing on social media, 4K is generally overkill because platforms re-encode everything anyway.
Resolution and bandwidth requirements
Higher resolution requires more bandwidth for smooth streaming:
- 480p: 1.5 to 3 Mbps
- 720p: 3 to 5 Mbps
- 1080p: 5 to 10 Mbps
- 4K: 15 to 25 Mbps
